Daughters of the King

St. Philip’s chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King was instituted on November 14, 1999 with 15 charter members. Under the leadership of Gloria Womack (who had been a Daughter at St. James the Less), we prepared for admission to the Order. Gloria became the first president and other officers included Debra Young Maggart, Carolyn LeRoy, and Pam Foster. Susan Skinner, Sue Bockmon, Glendora Bright, Helen Cook, Jane Maggard, Susan Parker, and Anne Bush were also charter members. Barbara Whalen was a charter member who just recently transferred to a new chapter in Shelbyville.

Other charter members included Barbara Miller, Kathy Grimes, and Anne Stockell (who died in 2003). Other Daughters who will be remembered on November 1st as we gather for corporate communion include Alice Boyd, Lou Swan, and Ruth Martin.

Even with the usual life changes that occur in any group of people, our chapter has grown to include about 30 women who serve the church and our rectors in many ways. Current membership includes, in addition to the ladies listed above: Alice Arnott, Rita Bohr, Jan Brown, Shirley Burks, Kathy Cochran, Indie Davis, Diane Elliott, Linda Grace, Helen Hall, Marie Hegler, Wilma Hutchison, Jessica Jones, Maggie Key, Kay Mueller, Pace Pope, Sue Rowen, Gerri Schutz, Barbara Tucker, and Rhonda Warren.

Over the years our chaplains have included the Rev. Peter Whalen, the Rev. Cynthia Seeliger, and the Rev. Vicki T. Burgess.

Our observance of the 10th anniversary of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary chapter includes Corporate Communion on November 1st, a Quiet Day for Women (all invited) on Saturday, November 7th, chapter meeting and class on Sunday, November 15th, and admission service for new Daughters on Sunday, November 22nd.

Daughters of the King is open to any woman who wants to enrich her spiritual journey through prayer, service, and evangelism. Just contact any officer (Pam Foster, Jan Brown, and Rita Bohr) or Chaplain Vicki for more information.
