Donelson Community Gardens
We have a new St. Philip’s outreach program. It is being an organizing sponsor of the Donelson Community Gardens. It evolved out of discussions on the Facebook page of “HIP Donelson”, a local community group which has well over 3,000 members. It is an absolutely terrific way for St. Philip’s to become involved with the community as it builds awareness of our church and can provide multiple opportunities for people to visit St. Philip’s.
HIP Donelson was organized for sharing ideas, news, supporting community events, and much more. They support our local businesses by promoting Donelson based businesses on Facebook. They support our local 501(c)3 non-profit organizations who serve our community through the sale of t-shirts and other promotional items sponsored by local businesses.
Tom Coulter has joined the Board of Donelson Community Gardens (DCG). Tom noted that DCG is in the organizational stage and rapid progress is being made. There are three initiatives currently in the works:
· Contract negotiations are underway for a several acre community garden at Metro’s Heartland Park, just a short way from St. Philip’s. This community garden will be implemented in the Spring of 2013.
· The 1st annual DCG Fall Festival is being planned for Saturday November 17th. This Festival will be at St. Philip’s!
· St, Philip’s has an active demonstration garden. We are growing pumpkins for the Fall Festival!
Tom noted that St. Philip’s has an unique opportunity to interact with the community. There is so much we could offer with our facilities, such as growing produce for 2nd Harvest, sponsoring nutritional education to youths, cooking and canning classes, a lending library, master gardening classes, etc. There is almost too much to choose from! Tom is looking for ideas on what we at St. Philip’s would like to do, both for the Fall Festival and for 2013. Let’s hear from like-minded folks to join with Tom in having some fun and in making a difference!
